Mount Nebo-11,928 feet

Mt Nebo, standing at almost 12,000 feet above sea level is the highest mountain in the Wasatch Range. So naturally it was only a matter of time before we ended up climbing it. It is almost 9 miles there and back with a total of 3800 feet of elevation gain. Let me tell you this is one tough hike. But well worth it. The views off the summit and along the way are spectacular.

It has been almost 2 years since we hiked up Mount Timpanogas, so we figured it was time to make another summit. Since Mount Nebo is the tallest peak in the Wasatch Mountain Range, we decided that it would become our next conquest. So, one Sunday monring in August, me, Dano and Eric headed out towards Nephi to put another summit under our belts.

To get to the trailhead, you have to head up the Nebo Loop. Its quite a ways up. And it turns out that the radiator in Eric's Truck had a hole in it. So by the time we got to the trailhead there was steam pouring out from under his hood. Luckily there was going to be plenty of time for the truck to cool down since we had a good 6-7 hours of hiking in front of us.

The hike up was a doozy. It started off with an insanely steep climb along a fence line. I started having flashbacks to our Mt Olympus hike (you can check out the pics here). The hike then meandered around a bit, then the serious climbing came back. We had to go up the side of a huge mountain. It was tough, and we had to stop a couple of times. Once we got to the top the trail then wound around the backside of Nebo North and headed down into a saddle. At first I welcomed the downhill, but quickly I realized that not only were we losing a lot of vertical but that on the way back, this section was going to be a bitch (I was right).

After taking a rest in the saddle between the North and South Peaks of Nebo, it was time for us to make a push for the summit. The final leg of this hike was a doozy. You end up gaining 1300 vertical feet in only three quarters of a mile. Not only was it steep, but the last 1000 feet you had to scramble up loose shale. It was very treacherous. Just the way I like it!!

The hike was worth it. The views from the Summit were breathtaking. For a change we were not running out of light, so we were able to relax for a bit on the summit. I really enjoyed that. Plus I was in no hurry to head back down. The way down was really steep and exposed and was completely covered in loose shale....

We couldnt live up there, so it was time to turn around and head back down. Let me tell you , what a descent. The top 1000 feet is above the tree line and completely exposed. There were times that I felt like I was holding on for dear life. In most of the pictures I am almost always holding on to something.

Once we navigated through the top section, it was smooth sailing into the saddle. Of course once we got there, I realized that we had the daunting task of having to climb up and over the next ridgeline. After what seemed like an eternity we got passed that and the rest of the way down was very pleasant.
